The US Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) is a federal law enforcement agency composed of officers, enlisted and civilian Special Agents, whose primary mission is to identify, exploit and neutralize criminal, terrorist and intelligence threats to the Air Force, Department of Defense and U.S. Government interests throughout the world. In carrying out this mission, OSI agents and support personnel perform duties in approximately 255 locations, including numerous forward deployed bases. Agents often work “outside the wire” in combat zones, recruiting human intelligence assets and gathering critical intelligence. Since 2001, 14 OSI personnel have been Killed in Action (KIA), during the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
On 1 November 2007, a team of agents, with the call sign Hammer One, left their base for an intelligence gathering operation. Amongst the members of Hammer One were Special Agents Thomas “Ozzy” Crowell, Nathan “Ned” Schuldheiss and David “Sham” Wieger, all assigned to AFOSI Det 2411, Balad AB, Iraq. While on the mission, their vehicle was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and all three died as a result of injuries sustained during the explosion. While serving with AFOSI, I trained with Ned and spent many hours working with Sham on surveillance, just prior to his deployment. I consider all three my brothers and heroes,
CrossFit HQ named Hero WODs in honor of each using their call signs: Ozzy, Ned and Sham. As 11/1/17 marks 10 years since they set out on their final mission, I wanted to do something in their honor. What originally started with the idea of me doing all three WODs in one day, quickly morphed into much more through the support and help of my wife Judy, and Krista and Geoff, owners of FireTower CrossFit. With their encouragement, we have organized The Hammer Slammer. This event will honor the life of these heroes, while helping raise awareness and funds for the Fallen, Not Forgotten Foundation. We’ve structured the event so anyone can participate on some level, whether it is participating in one or more of the WODs alone, as a team, or participating in the memorial run.
If you feel moved to provide additional support, donations are welcome and very much appreciated, with all contributions going to the Fallen, Not Forgotten Foundation. Created by several current and former OSI agents, this non-profit’s mission is to acquire and maintain recreational properties throughout the country where families of our Fallen can go to remember their loved ones, and enjoy their family, all at no cost to them. The Fallen, Not Forgotten Foundation is currently working to become a 501(c)3 and has begun raising capital to find and purchase the first property. More information can be found at www.legacyforourfallen.com. In addition, 100% of the proceeds from all t-shirt sales, registration fees and donations will be donated directly to this foundation.
